Find out about removable retainers and how they differ from fixed ones. Discover whether removable retainers are the best option for your orthodontic needs.

Removable retainers

Removable retainers are orthodontic devices used to maintain the position of teeth after the completion of orthodontic treatment. They are clear, flexible appliances which you can take in and out as needed. These retainers are typically custom-made for each patient and are designed to hold the teeth in their corrected positions, preventing them from returning to their original misalignment.

There are different types of removable retainers, but they generally consist of a plastic or acrylic base that fits over the roof of the mouth (for upper retainers) or against the tongue side of the lower teeth (for lower retainers).

Advantages of a Removable Retainer

Removable retainers offer several advantages compared to fixed retainers:

  • Easy Cleaning: Since they can be taken out, it’s easier to clean both the retainer and the teeth.
  • Eating and Drinking: Patients can remove the retainer while eating or drinking, which allows for more flexibility in their diet compared to fixed retainers.
  • Comfort: Some people find removable retainers more comfortable to wear than other types of retainers.

However, it’s important for patients to follow their orthodontist’s instructions regarding when and how long to wear the removable retainer. Consistent use is crucial to prevent the teeth from reverting to their previous positions. Over time, the frequency of wear may be reduced, but many orthodontists recommend wearing retainers on a long-term basis, especially during sleep.

It’s worth noting that there are also fixed retainers, which are bonded to the back of the teeth and are not removable. The choice between removable and fixed retainers depends on various factors, including the patient’s orthodontic needs, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Our orthodontists can provide guidance on the most suitable type of retainer for each individual case.
