Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers are orthodontic devices used in dentistry to maintain the alignment of teeth after orthodontic treatment. The purpose of retainers is to prevent the teeth from going back to their original positions and to ensure the stability of the orthodontic results.

What are Fixed Retainers?

Fixed retainers are called “fixed” because they are permanently attached to the back of the teeth. They consist of a thin wire that is bonded to the back (lingual) surfaces of the teeth. This wire is usually made of stainless steel or a similar durable material. It is custom-shaped to fit the unique contours of each patient’s teeth. Since fixed retainers are bonded to the back of the teeth, they are not visible when a person smiles. This makes them a discreet option for maintaining tooth alignment.

Retainer Placement

The retainer wire is typically attached to the lingual surfaces of the teeth using dental cement or adhesive. The bonding process is usually done by a dentist or orthodontist. The wire is carefully positioned to provide the necessary support to prevent the teeth from shifting.

How long do Fixed Retainers last?

Fixed retainers are designed to be durable and are intended to remain in place for an extended period. They are constructed to withstand normal biting and chewing forces.

Maintenance and Care

While fixed retainers are effective in maintaining tooth alignment, they do require special attention to oral hygiene. It’s important to clean around the retainer wire carefully to prevent plaque buildup and reduce the risk of dental issues such as cavities or gum problems.

Fixed retainers are often recommended for long-term use, and some patients may wear them indefinitely. The duration of retainer use varies depending on individual factors, and our orthodontic professionals will provide guidance on when and how to transition to less frequent wear.

It’s important for individuals with fixed retainers to attend regular dental check-ups to monitor the condition of the retainer and overall oral health. Any concerns or issues should be addressed promptly to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of the retainer in maintaining tooth alignment.
