Brushing your teeth is something we all do but are you doing it correctly?
Even the most diligent brushers can unknowingly develop bad habits that may harm their oral health over time.
At The Kensington Dentist, we see the effects of improper brushing every day. So here are the top brushing mistakes we see and how to fix them for a cleaner, healthier smile.
1. Brushing Too Hard
Many people believe that scrubbing harder means a better clean, but that’s how you can damage your enamel and irritate your gums.
Our tip: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions. Think massage, not scrub! Slowly is the key!
2. Not Brushing Long Enough
Another common tooth brushing mistake is not brushing for long enough. The average person only brushes for 45 seconds, but the recommended time is 2 full minutes.
Our tip: Use a timer, play a song, or try an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.
3. Ignoring the Gum Line
Bacteria love to hide along the gum line, and missing this area can lead to gum disease.
Our tip to avoid this mistake: Angle your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gums and gently clean where your teeth meet your gums.
4. Not Replacing Your Toothbrush
A worn-out toothbrush doesn’t clean well and can even harbour bacteria. Most people forget to replace it often enough.
Our tip: Change your toothbrush (or brush head) every 3 months or sooner if the bristles look frayed or after a cold/flu.
Even small changes in your brushing routine can make a big difference in your oral health. If you’re unsure, bring your brush to your next dental check up — we’re happy to show you the best technique!
