Metal Braces

Fixed metal braces are widely regarded as the most traditional orthodontic solution, often serving as the primary image of orthodontic treatment. These braces consist of metal brackets affixed to the teeth, connected by a wire that gradually shifts the teeth into their desired positions.

While they are highly effective for treating a wide range of dental issues—such as misalignment, overcrowding, and bite problems—metal braces are also known for their durability and precision. Though they are the most visible type of orthodontic treatment, advancements in materials and techniques have made them more comfortable and efficient than ever before. Fixed metal braces remain a trusted option for patients of all ages seeking reliable, long-term results.

Material and Appearance

Fixed metal braces are typically composed of metal brackets that are securely affixed to each tooth and connected by a wire. The wire is held in place by small elastic bands, which can be customised in various colours, allowing for a personalised touch. While their construction is similar to that of ceramic braces, metal braces are more visible due to their less discreet colour, making them more prominent in the mouth.

The Metal Braces Process: What to Expect

The journey with metal braces begins with a consultation at our London practice with our in-house orthodontist, Dr. David Young. During this consultation, Dr. Young will conduct a thorough assessment, including X-rays and scans, to evaluate your dental needs. He will discuss all available orthodontic treatment options, address any questions or concerns, and help determine if fixed metal braces are the most suitable solution for you. If necessary, he may recommend an alternative treatment method. Nothing will not be discussed! You will also receive a comprehensive treatment plan that outlines the associated costs, expected outcomes, potential side effects, and what to anticipate throughout your orthodontic journey and long after!

Once fixed metal braces are deemed appropriate, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled for the fitting. This procedure is typically carried out by Dr. Young or his trainee Orthodontic Therapist, Saba. During the fitting, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared to ensure optimal adhesion of the brackets using a bonding agent. Following the placement of the brackets, the wire is threaded through, and any necessary adjustments are made to begin the process of tooth alignment.

You will then visit our practice every 8 weeks for follow-up appointments, during which your braces will be adjusted, and your progress will be monitored.

The duration of treatment with metal braces varies depending on the severity of your alignment issues but generally lasts between 18 to 24 months. Once your treatment has finished, Dr Young or Saba will take some scans to make a retainer for you. This retainer is then worn every night to maintain your beautiful smile.

Benefits of Fixed Metal Braces

  • A benefit of fixed metal braces is that they are extremely effective and are often a widely preferred orthodontic solution due to their ability to deliver reliable and predictable results. They are effective in addressing a variety of dental issues, including overbites, overcrowding, and misalignment.
  • They also give reliable outcomes. Since metal braces are fixed to your teeth for the duration of the treatment, they offer greater consistency compared to removable aligners like Invisalign. This is because the treatment process cannot be interrupted by factors such as forgetting to wear the aligners or removing them for extended periods. The fixed nature of metal braces ensures continuous and consistent progress towards the desired outcome.

Overall, fixed metal braces offer a reliable and widely recognised solution for individuals seeking to straighten their teeth, making them a popular choice for both adult and paediatric orthodontic care. While metal braces may seem like the ideal option for your needs, it is important to consult with Dr Young to explore all available treatment options and gather detailed information before proceeding with your chosen plan.
