Airflow Dental Cleaning

What is Air Flow Dental Cleaning?

Air Flow® uses a fine spray of warmed water & Erythritol PLUS powder to gently deep clean the tooth surface above and below the gum line. This minimally invasive technology is safe to use on all oral surfaces & difficult to reach places.

Components of the Airflow Dental Device

The airflow device typically consists of a handpiece connected to an air and water supply, along with a reservoir for the fine abrasive powder. The abrasive powder is usually a mixture of water and sodium bicarbonate or glycine.

Dental Cleaning Procedure:

During an airflow procedure, the dentist or dental hygienist directs the airflow device at the tooth surfaces. The mixture of air, water, and abrasive powder effectively removes surface stains, dental plaque, and soft deposits, leaving the teeth clean and polished.

Benefits of an Airflow Dental Cleaning:

  • Efficient Cleaning: Airflow efficiently removes surface stains caused by factors like coffee, tea, tobacco, and certain foods.
  • Minimally Invasive: Airflow is a gentle and minimally invasive cleaning technique that is usually well-tolerated by patients.
  • Comfortable: Patients often find airflow cleanings more comfortable compared to traditional cleaning methods.

Stain Removal

Airflow is particularly effective at removing extrinsic stains (stains on the tooth surface) by blasting away the discoloured particles without damaging the tooth enamel.

Plaque Removal

The abrasive action of the airflow helps in removing dental plaque and soft deposits from the tooth surfaces.

Maintenance

Airflow dental cleanings are often part of regular dental maintenance and are typically recommended every six months during routine dental check-ups.

It is important to note that while airflow is an effective cleaning technique, traditional scaling and polishing with hand instruments may still be necessary in some cases for a thorough dental cleaning, especially in areas that require more detailed attention. Our dentists will determine the most suitable cleaning method based on individual patient needs and oral health conditions. For more information, get in touch with us, or enquire about making an appointment today.
