Re-root canal treatment

Re-root canal treatment, also known as endodontic retreatment, is a dental procedure performed to address issues that have persisted or recurred after a previous root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment is typically performed to save a tooth by removing infected or damaged pulp from the tooth’s interior, but in some cases, the initial treatment may not completely resolve the problem and/or get infected or does not heal properly.

Indications for Re-root Canal Treatment:

  • Persistent Pain or Discomfort: If a tooth continues to cause pain, discomfort, or sensitivity after a previous root canal procedure.
  • Pain on biting down
  • Inadequate Healing (blister or bump inside your mouth): Incomplete healing or signs of infection, such as swelling or drainage, near the tooth following a previous root canal treatment.
  • New Issues: If new decay or damage has occurred since the initial root canal, making the tooth vulnerable to infection.

Re-root Canal Procedure:

  • Evaluation: The dentist or endodontist first examines the tooth and reviews the patient’s dental history, X-rays, and previous treatment records.
  • Access to the Root Canal: The tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic. The crown (top portion of the tooth) is often removed to gain access to the root canal.
  • Removal of Filling Material: The existing filling material and any remaining infected or damaged tissue are carefully removed from the root canal.
  • Cleaning and Disinfection: The root canal is cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare it for a new filling.
  • New Filling: The cleaned root canal is then filled and sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent further infection.

Post-Treatment Care:

  • Patients may experience mild discomfort or swelling following the procedure, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
  • It’s essential to follow proper oral hygiene practices, attend regular dental check-ups, and maintain good dental health to prevent future issues.

Success Rate of a Re-root Canal Treatment:

The success rate of re-root canal treatment is generally high. However, success depends on various factors, including the tooth’s condition, the skill of the endodontist, and the patient’s overall oral health.

In cases where re-root canal treatment is not viable or unsuccessful, we can suggest alternative options which may include tooth extraction followed by a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture.

It’s important to consult with one of our experienced endodontists or dentists to discuss the best course of action based on the specific situation and determine if re-root canal treatment is a suitable treatment option.

Although it is possible to do a second or third root canal treatment—or more—on a tooth, the results are unpredictable. Even the most skilled dentists can perform root canal treatment that fails. Studies show that root canal treatment has an 86 – 98% success rate.

Whenever possible, it is best to save your natural tooth. Retreated teeth can function well for years, even for a lifetime. Contact our practice today to learn more about a re-root canal treatment or to arrange an initial consultation.
