Frequently Asked Questions About Braces – how to keep a healthy smile through your orthodontic treatment

With Saba (trainee orthodontic therapist and dental nurse)

Hannah: Hey Everyone! Today I am here with Saba, she is our trainee orthodontic therapist, due to graduate at the end of the year. Today she is going to talk us through some frequently asked questions around braces.

Okay Saba, so are braces painful?

Saba: They can be uncomfortable at first but you get used to it.

Hannah: Can you give us an estimate on how long a patient would normally be in treatment for?

Saba: Usually 1-3 years but it depends on the case.

Hannah: Are braces just for children or can adults receive treatment too?

Saba: No! Adults can have braces too! It’s never too late to have a beautiful smile!

Hannah: So, if a patient is undergoing braces as their orthodontic treatment. What types of food should they avoid?

Saba: Hard chewy and sticky foods, these foods can break the brackets. For example; hard crusty breads, nuts and chewing gums.

Hannah: So, once a patient has finished their braces treatment with us, are they required to wear a retainer, or will they maintain their beautiful smile?

Saba:Yes, they will need to. Retention is for life. If you want your teeth to stay straight, you need to wear the retainers.

Hannah: Do you have any recommendations for those undergoing braces treatment?

Saba: Yes, so make sure you attend your regular appointments (8-12 weeks for orthodontics) regular checkups and regular hygiene appointments.

Hannah: Thank you for your time today Saba.

Saba: No worries at all.
