Everything you need to know about Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, which are clinically known as third molars, are the final set of teeth to emerge, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. For some, they arrive without issue; for many others, however, they can become a source of discomfort, crowding, and oral health complications. At our London clinic, we believe in combining clinical excellence with a calm, considered approach to care. With wisdom teeth removal, we ensure every patient feels informed, reassured, and expertly treated.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a vestige of our evolutionary past, when our ancestors required larger jaws and additional molars to process a coarse diet. Today, with more refined nutrition and smaller jaw structures, these teeth are often unnecessary—and frequently problematic.

What problems can wisdom teeth cause?

Not all wisdom teeth require removal. However, complications can arise when there isn’t sufficient space for them to erupt properly. These include:

  • Impaction – when the tooth becomes trapped beneath the gum or against neighbouring teeth
  • Crowding – leading to misalignment of otherwise straight teeth
  • Infection and inflammation – often caused by partially erupted teeth that are difficult to clean
  • Cysts or damage to adjacent teeth – in more advanced cases

Symptoms that your wisdom teeth are causing problems may include jaw pain, swelling, bad breath, or difficulty opening the mouth comfortably.

When Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Recommended?

After a clinical examination, often supported by digital imaging, allows us to assess the position and health of your wisdom teeth. Removal is typically advised when there is clear risk of infection, damage to surrounding teeth, or ongoing discomfort. Your treating dentist will refer you to either Mr Jonas Osher (our inhouse Maxillofacial surgeon) or Dr Nikos Mardas (our in house periodontal specialist), for the removal of these.

Our approach is always conservative and patient-focused, we only recommend extraction when it is genuinely beneficial to your long-term oral health.

The Treatment Experience

We understand that the idea of dental surgery can feel daunting. Wisdom teeth removal is a routine procedure carried out by highly experienced clinicians. Depending on the complexity, treatment may be performed under local anaesthetic, with sedation options available for those who prefer a more relaxed experience. We can do these tooth extractions at our clinic here in Kensington.
