Composite Bonding and Build-Ups

What is a composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a conservative way of changing the shape of your teeth using a composite resin material which is strong and durable. It is considered more restorative as the dentist does not have to significantly reduce your tooth enamel to place the build-up. Giving a natural look that blends with surrounding teeth.

Composite bonding is most suitable for upper front teeth and can make a huge difference to the smile making it more harmonious. A complete smile makeover can be achieved with composite bondings at our practice in London, in a quick and non-invasive way.

Why would I need composite bonding?

Composite bonding is an option for patients who wish to:

  • Change the shape of teeth
  • Make teeth look longer and/or wider
  • Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • Fix gaps between teeth

They are also very useful for patients that have finished orthodontic treatment with correctly aligned but uneven teeth.

Benefits of Composite Bonding

  • Quick and minimally invasive
  • An even smile
  • A healthier looking smile
  • Increased confidence in your appearance
  • Quick and minimally invasive

How is the procedure performed?

Composite bonding on one tooth usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the desired outcome.

Normally, no local anaesthetic is needed and your dentist only roughens the surface of the tooth so no enamel is lost. The rough surface makes it easier for the bonding liquid and composite to stick.

One of our dentists will then select a composite resin shade that closely matches the natural colour of your teeth and apply the composite resin over the liquid; mould or shape the tooth, and then harden the material with a UV light. The dentist will then polish the restoration producing a very natural result.

Before and after photos are also taken to compare the results of the composite bonding.

How long does composite bonding generally last?

Build ups on the front teeth can last between 5 and 10 years, depending on your bite and eating habits. It’s usually better to avoid biting directly into your food, particularly hard foods like apples. Other habits to avoid are biting fingernails, pens, ice or other hard objects.

Composite bonding maintenance and care

Taking care of your composite build ups once the procedure has been completed is important to make sure that they last as long as possible. Some general advice for maintenance is:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss
  • Avoid biting on hard food and confectionery with the front teeth
  • Attend hygienist appointments and dental check ups regularly
